性爱视频 President Dr. John Scaringe Delivers Commencement Message on Compassion to the Class of 2025

At Southern California University of Health Sciences鈥 2025 Commencement Ceremony, University President Dr. John Scaringe delivered a heartfelt and deeply personal address centered on one essential principle: compassion.

Speaking to graduates poised to enter the healthcare professions, Dr. Scaringe reminded the Class of 2025 that while clinical knowledge and technical expertise are critical, it is compassion 鈥 expressed through presence, dignity, and action 鈥 that ultimately defines meaningful leadership and healing.

Through personal stories drawn from his own life, Dr. Scaringe illustrated that compassion is not simply an abstract value or 鈥渟oft skill,鈥 but a courageous, active choice to show up for others during their most vulnerable moments. His message resonated strongly with 性爱视频鈥檚 mission to educate healthcare leaders who care for the whole person 鈥 body, mind, and spirit.

Dr. Scaringe鈥檚 Commencement Speech

Today is truly a remarkable day for you, your families, your faculty, and let’s be honest, it’s also a remarkable day for anyone who no longer has to hear, 鈥淚 can’t, I have to study.鈥 You and your loved ones have waited a long time for this moment. Commencement ceremonies often invite big themes such as success, purpose, and, in our case, the future of healthcare.

But before we discuss any of that, I want to begin somewhere a little simpler, somewhere human. Somewhere, far from the clinics, the classroom, or accreditation reports. I want to start in a high school locker room. When I was a senior in high school, at the end of a senior tournament, I wrestled my final match, and I lost.

Now, if you’ve ever been 17, you are absolutely certain that the entire universe is paying attention to your every move. You know exactly what that felt like. So, I walked into the locker room, and I sat by myself. I wasn’t angry. I wasn’t hurt. I was simply disappointed. The kind that feels enormous right at that age, because most disappointments do.

A few minutes later. My father walked in. He didn’t tell me to shake it off. He didn’t give me a pep talk. He didn’t offer a replay of the footage of what I should have done, what I didn’t do, and what I could have done. He didn’t even give me that classic dad line of, 鈥淪omeday you’ll laugh at this,鈥 because he knew I wasn’t going to be laughing anytime soon.

He sat down next to me. Quiet, present, and even though the disappointment didn’t go away, something else happened. I didn’t feel alone anymore. Years later, I realized what he offered that day. It wasn’t advice, it wasn’t encouragement. It wasn’t even problem-solving. It was compassion. The quiet kind that doesn’t just fix the moment.

He doesn’t try to fix that moment, but he chooses to be in that moment with you, and that simple act has stayed with me throughout my life. Compassion is often confused with empathy. They’re related, but they’re not exactly the same.

For example, empathy is seeing someone on the side of the road on a rainy day fixing their flat tire, and you say to yourself. Oh, that poor son of a gun, that must be awful. Compassion is stopping, getting out, and helping them fix that flat tire. Compassion is movement. In other words, empathy feels, compassion moves.

Empathy understands the moment, and compassion enters it. And in healthcare, that is all the difference. Your patients won’t just need your knowledge. They won’t just need your technical expertise. They will need your presence, your willingness to step in the moment with them. That shift from feeling to doing is where healing begins in your career.

You will meet people on some of their hardest days鈥攑eople who feel vulnerable, afraid, confused, and overwhelmed. Two patients may walk in with the same diagnosis but carry entirely different stories. Compassion is what helps you treat the story as much as the symptoms. It shows up in small and often unnoticed ways when you take a moment longer to listen.

When you ask a question that nobody else has thought to ask, and when you acknowledge a fear, rather than rush past it. When you offer dignity in a time when someone feels exposed, not because the moment was any less painful, but when your presence says simply, you matter. Compassion doesn’t require perfection. It requires presence.

Presence is often the most healing thing you can offer. Whether or not you see yourself as a leader today, compassion will make you a leader. Leadership isn’t about authority. Leadership is the courage to act, to care, to advocate for someone who has no voice, to slow down when the world tells you to speed up, and to speak out when something isn’t right.

There will be days when you’re tired and rushed and stretched so thin that the easiest path is not the compassionate one. Those are the moments that define a career, not the easy decisions, the meaningful ones. Compassion is not a soft skill. It is a courage in everyday form.

A few months ago, I delivered my mother’s eulogy. It was one of the hardest moments in my life, but when I finished speaking, I did feel something unexpected: comfort, not because it was any less painful, because believe me, it wasn’t. But, because compassion had surrounded her during her final years from my brothers who were with her nearby in New York, from her caretakers, and from other loved ones. All from people who treated her with dignity.

Dignity when she needed it the most. In that moment, I understood clearly that compassion doesn’t erase pain, it doesn’t fix everything, but it does connect us when we need it the very most, and that connection can be transformational. So, as you step off the stage today into your professional lives, here is my hope for you.

Let your empathy become passion. Let your compassion become action. Let your presence be part of the healing you provide. Show up for people, not perfectly, but fully. Listen with patience, advocate with courage. Lead with your heart. Compassion isn’t something you add to healthcare. Compassion is healthcare, and when you lead with it, you will not only transform the lives of others. You will transform on your own as well.

I often think back to that moment in the locker room with my dad. He didn’t take away my disappointment. He didn’t change the outcome. He showed up. That’s compassion. Not fixing everything, not having the perfect words, just choosing to be there.

As you enter your profession, you will have countless opportunities to show up in moments, big and small, seen and unseen. Do it with courage, do it with humanity. Do it with passion.

Congratulations, graduates. Good luck and Godspeed.

Dr. John Scaringe, President of Southern California University of Health Sciences, delivered an inspiring and heartfelt address at the 2025 Commencement Ceremony, challenging the graduates to lead with compassion as they step into their professional careers.

Drawing from personal experiences, Dr. Scaringe emphasized that compassion goes beyond simply understanding another person鈥檚 struggle, reminding graduates that 鈥渆mpathy feels, but compassion moves.鈥 He encouraged students to view compassion as an active choice. One that requires presence, courage, and a willingness to show up for others during moments of vulnerability.

Throughout his remarks, Dr. Scaringe highlighted the critical role compassion plays in healthcare, noting that while knowledge and technical expertise are essential, they are not enough on their own.

鈥淐ompassion doesn鈥檛 require perfection. It requires presence,鈥 he said, underscoring the importance of truly being there for patients and treating not just symptoms, but the person behind the diagnosis. He also reframed compassion as a form of leadership, describing it as 鈥渃ourage in everyday form,鈥 especially during moments when taking the compassionate path may be the most challenging.

As he concluded, Dr. Scaringe left graduates with a powerful reminder that compassion is not an optional trait in healthcare, but a foundational one. 鈥淐ompassion isn鈥檛 something you add to healthcare 鈥 compassion is healthcare,鈥 he said, encouraging graduates to carry that mindset forward as they begin their careers and work to transform the lives of others through whole-person, human-centered care.

The ceremony also featured a reflective and inspiring commencement address from Dr. Russell Greenfield, a nationally recognized physician leader in Whole Health who has spent his career advancing human-centered models of care across healthcare systems nationwide. Dr. Greenfield has served in senior leadership roles with the Veterans Health Administration, the Whole Health Institute, and Novant Health鈥檚 Weisiger Cancer Institute, and continues to work directly with patients while helping communities build whole-person approaches to care.

In his remarks, Dr. Greenfield framed the healing professions as a sacred calling rooted in service, humility, and presence. He reminded graduates that true healing begins not with fixing problems, but with honoring lives, stating, 鈥淵ou see people not as problems to be fixed, but as lives to be honored.鈥 Drawing from personal experience and long-standing traditions within the healing arts, he encouraged graduates to approach their work with gratitude and compassion, even in the smallest moments of care.

As he concluded, Dr. Greenfield offered the Class of 2025 a message of reassurance and purpose, emphasizing that meaningful impact does not require grand gestures. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not your responsibility to heal the world鈥 and yet, odds are very good that you will,鈥 he said.

His words reinforced 性爱视频鈥檚 commitment to Whole Health and left graduates with a powerful reminder that through humility, service, and presence, they are uniquely prepared to help shape the future of healthcare.

Graduating Master of Science: Physician Assistant program student Jamie Gabriel was named the 性爱视频 Class of 2025 valedictorian. She delivered a powerful and personal address that reflected perseverance, balance, and service in healthcare.

A full-time captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and a nontraditional student, Gabriel shared how returning to school later in life was driven by a commitment to lifelong learning and setting an example for her family.

In her remarks, Gabriel emphasized the importance of whole-person care and the responsibility healthcare professionals have to see beyond diagnoses and data points. 鈥淥ur patients don鈥檛 come to us as symptoms or lab values. They come as people with stories, fears, hopes, and dreams,鈥 she said, underscoring the integrative approach that defines 性爱视频鈥檚 educational philosophy. She also highlighted the need for balance鈥攏ot only in patient care but also in clinicians鈥 own lives鈥攔eminding graduates that personal well-being is essential to providing meaningful, compassionate care.

Gabriel closed by challenging the Class of 2025 to lead with accountability and service. 鈥淟eadership in healthcare is not about authority. It is about the responsibility of service to others,鈥 she said, encouraging graduates to step confidently into the roles they are prepared to fill and help shape the future of healthcare through humility, balance, and purpose.

性爱视频鈥檚 听2025 Alumni of the Year Whole Health Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Valerie Johnson. Dr. Johnson embodies the spirit of this award through her pioneering leadership in integrative, whole-person healthcare. As one of the first chiropractors employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, she has been instrumental in shaping the role of chiropractic in federal healthcare and advancing the VA Whole Health model.

Dr. Johnson鈥檚 commitment to inclusivity and diversity shines through the welcoming, collaborative environments she fosters for patients, colleagues, and learners. Through her compassion, advocacy, and clinical excellence, Dr. Johnson has redefined what integrative chiropractic can achieve.

The President鈥檚 Leadership Award was presented to Doctor of Chiropractic graduate George Zakhary for his leadership in contributing to the campus community, advocating for their chosen profession, and providing community service.

性爱视频鈥檚 Summer IPE Week Brings Together Over 200 Students from Eight Different Academic Programs

A record-breaking week of immersive, team-based learning prepares future healthcare professionals to lead in integrative, whole-person care.

Summer IPE Week

From July 28, 2025, to August 1, 2025, the 性爱视频 Center for Interprofessional Education hosted Summer IPE Week on campus. The week brought together more than 200 students for hands-on learning that strengthened teamwork, communication, and whole-person care across health disciplines.

Students from eight programs worked side by side:

  • Ayurveda
  • Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine
  • Chiropractic
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physician Assistant Studies
  • Accelerated Sciences
  • Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences
  • Master of Science in Medical Science

Faculty designed activities that mirrored real clinical settings, so students could practice skills they will use with patients and teams.

鈥淚PE at 性爱视频 is where integrative, whole health comes to life,鈥 said Karina Madrigal, EdD, MA, Dean of Interprofessional Education. 鈥淥ur model is bold, inclusive, and transformative鈥攂ringing together students from both complementary and conventional medicine.鈥 She noted that interprofessional education is an institutionalized system embedded across more than 15 academic programs. Students learn with, from, and about one another, and they graduate ready to practice in team-based care settings. 性爱视频鈥檚 model blends Eastern and Western care traditions to match how modern health systems operate and to prepare graduates to lead in integrative care.

Students rotated through team scenarios that required clear roles, shared decision-making, and direct communication with patients and caregivers. Sessions focused on three high-impact skills:

  • Identifying system failures and contributing to a culture of safety and continuous quality improvement
  • Handing off patients in a structured way to support safe care transitions
  • Speaking with patients, families, and the care team in plain language to align on goals

These scenarios matched the pace and pressure of real practice, so teams could learn, adjust, and improve in the moment. Among the highlights was 性爱视频鈥檚 signature care coordination simulation, which brought multiple disciplines together to co-manage complex cases in real time.

Pre- and post-assessments showed gains across IPEC core competencies: Values and Ethics, Roles and Responsibilities, Interprofessional Communication, and Teams/Teamwork. The results also aligned with 性爱视频鈥檚 鈥淟earning in Action鈥 measure, which tracks applied skills. 鈥淭he data confirm that our model not only changes what students know鈥攊t changes how they think and work,鈥 said Madrigal.

Skills from IPE Week translate directly to clinics and community sites. Students practiced structured handovers that reduce errors. They clarified the scope and responsibility so teams can respond faster. They used shared care plans that keep the patient and family at the center. As a result, students left not only with greater confidence, but with a strengthened ability to work across disciplines 鈥 ready to lead and collaborate as part of interprofessional teams united by a shared goal: advancing integrative, whole-person health and improving outcomes for the patients and communities they serve.

Collaboration starts early at 性爱视频. Students experience interprofessional learning from their first year, so teamwork becomes second nature. By the time they enter clinical placements, they already know how to listen across disciplines and keep care plans aligned with patient goals.

This year鈥檚 Summer IPE Week set a new bar for participation and impact. It showed how 性爱视频鈥檚 interprofessional model helps students grow as clinicians and as teammates. It also showed how a campus community can come together around a shared aim: to deliver whole-person care for every patient in every setting.

Not all students take a straight path through their healthcare careers. For Melissa Scharfe, Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) class of 2023, that road has consisted of multiple degrees that culminated in her desire to attend medical school to pursue emergency surgery. Now, after completing her MSMS degree, which mimics the first year of medical school, Melissa is confident in her decision to start medical school next fall.

性爱视频’s Master of Science in Medical Science

性爱视频’s post-baccalaureate online or blended MSMS degree empowers students to strengthen their academic profiles for admission into medical, dental, physician assistant, veterinary, and other professional healthcare programs, preparing them to become transformative leaders in healthcare. For professionals such as Melissa, it provides the flexibility to study online and be part of a hybrid program with medical school linkage.

“If you knew me back in undergrad, I always dreamt of a medical degree. Medicine has always been the goal, but life happened,鈥 Melissa says. “Life is not fair, nor is it kind. And with that, I had to distinguish my priorities.鈥

“Recently, I remembered having a heart-to-heart conversation with someone, and he said that I would get a light in my eyes whenever I spoke of the hospital, and especially emergencies. I then reprioritized my life and decided to make my dreams a reality.鈥

Preparing Students for Medical School

Melissa holds a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from University California, Riverside and a Master of Public Health from West Coast University. After attending an anatomy conference in Italy that explored the history of healthcare, she came back reinvigorated to see if she was ready to attend medical school.

Melissa Scharfe with 性爱视频 President Dr. John Scaringe, DC, EdD

“性爱视频 provided me with the opportunity to challenge myself,鈥 Melissa recalls. “Could someone like me handle the demands of medical school classes? Sitting in the same lectures and taking the same exams as the first-year medical students (M1) was a daunting yet invigorating test to determine if I was cut for this.鈥

Melissa says that the most impactful courses she took in 性爱视频’s MSMS program “were the ones that pushed me outside my comfort zone, revealing my weaknesses.

Surprisingly, the hard reality of Microbiology became the challenge I needed. Despite the difficulties with Microbiology, it was Dr. Seema Hardias who made a challenging class one that I really wanted to show up for. She had a passion for teaching that I only hope to adopt in my lifetime.鈥 Sadly, Dr. Seema Hardias on October 6, 2023. Melissa’s fond memories for Dr. Hardias’ class are a testament to her dedication as a teacher, and she will be deeply missed as a member of 性爱视频’s community.

The Foundation to Excel

As she approaches graduation, Melissa is thankful for the opportunity the MSMS program gave her. “The MSMS program is designed to provide students like me with a strong foundation in the medical sciences,鈥 she says.

“性爱视频 has given me the platform to build on these foundations and be competitive with students that are fresh out of undergrad. I have interviewed with multiple medical schools that would not have seen me as a strong candidate before the MSMS program.鈥

Melissa Scharfe with Dr. Ferrahs Adselbaset and Dr. Polka Kumar of Ponce Health Sciences University

As for advice for future students, Melissa has a few pointers: “If pursuing this career is truly your passion, it is achievable. Attend classes consistently, be proactive in asking questions, and don’t hesitate to communicate with your professors and dean.鈥

“My strong connections with all my professors and Dr. Khorsan played a pivotal role in navigating the program. These relationships not only led to valuable letters of recommendation for future endeavors but also provided a realistic perspective on the challenges posed by the courses.鈥

The MSMS program is available both online and blended, with starting dates in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Students may opt for one of three program schedules and delivery method combinations, and the entire program can be completed in as little as three terms. Interprofessional Education Model Builds Bridges

Southern California University (性爱视频)’s groundbreaking Interprofessional Education (IPE) model combines curriculum, clinic, community, and clubs to help students develop a broader base of knowledge and gain a deeper appreciation for different perspectives on care. To celebrate this innovative model and honor the ways we share knowledge, build skills, and improve patient outcomes by bridging academic and clinical communities, 性爱视频 launched the IPE and Collaborative Practice Week in June 2022.

Now, having completed its second year, the IPE and Collaborative Practice Week is well on its way to cementing itself as an annual, university-wide tradition.

“Student feedback was very positive,鈥 Dr. Preetideep Singh, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor for the Interprofessional Education Department, said. “Through the IPE events they had the opportunity to learn from, with, and about each other.鈥

IPE AT 性爱视频

IPE fills the void that often exists in healthcare education delivery systems. To fully meet the complex healthcare needs of patients, a broad range of different perspectives, expertise, and education is required.

Interprofessional care ranges from clinical to community providers, family caregivers to case managers, primary care physicians to physician assistants, specialists such as chiropractors and acupuncturists, and social workers, pharmacists, psychologists, and long-term care providers.

IPE at 性爱视频 is a University-wide model that includes curriculum, clinicals, community, and clubs, providing a seamless transition from student to practitioner. In the IPE model, students from two or more professions learn with, from, and about each other to improve patient and population outcomes.

性爱视频 also provides a unique combination of medical and complementary health models, preparing students to become transformational leaders in healthcare.

GROWING VISIBILITY AND PARTICIPATION

As 性爱视频’s 2nd year hosting the IPE and Collaborative Practice Week, IPE efforts across the university have continued to grow, increasing both visibility and student participation. “We did a modalities event this year where faculty and students from all clinical programs showcased some of their modalities of treatment. It was a great opportunity for students to engage with each other and learn about different disciplines,鈥 Dr. Singh said.

Students show off their submission to the body painting competition.

Students show off their submission to the body painting competition.

This year’s event also included a virtual collaborative case competition, where students from different professions and programs collaborated to solve clinical cases together. This tested their basic science knowledge, clinical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and teamwork abilities.

“The virtual collaborative case competition was a true IPE experience from creation to implementation involving faculty and students from various programs,鈥 Dr. Singh said.

Another featured event was the anatomy body painting and Play-Doh competition, where students were required to paint or construct anatomical structures in detail involving a specific region. This experiential learning served as a tool for learning surface anatomy and associated clinical skills in a team-based environment.

IPE AND INTEGRATIVE, WHOLE-PERSON HEALTH

The IPE model also supports 性爱视频’s core value of integrative, whole-person health, in which we teach, learn, collaborate, and lead by creating an open environment for multiple disciplines and professionals to bring their shared and unique skills together for the benefit of patients and students.

Dr. Singh elaborates, “The IPE model equips healthcare professional students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for collaborative, patient-centered, and evidence-based care that addresses the full spectrum of whole health involving conventional and complementary practices.鈥

“All the events were tied to achievement of certain interprofessional education competencies.鈥 – Dr. Preetideep Singh, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor for the Interprofessional Education Department

At 性爱视频, interprofessional education and integrative, whole person health go hand in hand. As part of our mission to educate students as competent, caring, and successful integrative healthcare practitioners and professionals, we openly, skillfully, and productively address tensions between our professions and departments in the pursuit of transforming health and healthcare education.

We look forward to celebrating future IPE and Collaborative Practice Weeks at 性爱视频 to bring further visibility to IPE and help prepare students to one day serve as a vital part of an interprofessional care team.

Partnership enhances educational pathways to medicine by providing five interview slots for 性爱视频 graduates

WHITTIER, CA – (Feb. 24, 2023) Southern California University of Health Sciences (性爱视频) has announced a new partnership with (ATSU-SOMA) to expand access to education for aspiring physicians looking to earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Through this partnership, five annual interview slots are reserved for 性爱视频 students who graduate from the Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program for consideration of acceptance to the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree program at A.T. Still University. The two-year agreement began in January 2023 and will be reviewed every two years.

性爱视频’s post-baccalaureate MSMS program is designed to assist students who would like to enhance their academic credentials for entry into medical, dental, physician assistant, veterinarian, or other professional healthcare programs. The MSMS degree program is offered both online as well as a hybrid/blended format, and can be completed in as little as one year. The program mirrors the traditional first year of medical school in its design, pace, and rigor and prepares students for success in their first year of medical school.

ATSU-SOMA prepares individuals through high-quality, innovative, learning-centered undergraduate and graduate medical education programs to become compassionate osteopathic physicians and healthcare leaders who serve medically underserved populations with a focus on research and community-oriented primary care.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine are fully-licensed physicians who practice in all areas of medicine. Emphasizing a whole-person approach to treatment and care, DOs are trained to listen to, and partner with their patients to promote health. DOs receive special training in the osteopathic manipulative medicine, the musculoskeletal system, as well as the body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones. Osteopathic physicians focus on the mind, body and spirit, by addressing how lifestyle and environment impact wellbeing. More than one in four of all current U.S. medical students are enrolled in an osteopathic medical program, according to the (AACOM).

“ATSU-SOMA is pleased to join 性爱视频 in granting opportunities for their MSMS graduates to explore osteopathic medical education as an optimal path toward providing healthcare to the nation’s most vulnerable patients and communities,” said ATSU-SOMA Dean Sharon Obadia, DO, FNAOME.

“This new agreement is excellent news for 性爱视频 MSMS students with dreams of becoming DOs,鈥 said Raheleh Khorsan, Ph.D., program director, MSMS Program at 性爱视频. “性爱视频 is proud to have been educating medical science students since our MSMS Program began in 2020. This agreement creates the opportunity to increase the number of both medical sciences students, and future medical students at ATSU-SOMA. It is through institutional agreements such as this that our common goal can be reached鈥攖o increase health sciences and medical students to fill the need for additional healthcare professionals for communities.鈥

A letter of endorsement for 性爱视频 MSMS students to be interviewed under the agreement must be submitted by the Pre-Health Advising Program Director to ATSU-Admissions by Sept. 30 of the annual admissions cycle. To be selected for candidacy, 性爱视频 applicants must meet .

“Preparing and training healthcare professionals to address growing needs for a growing population is a shared goal between our universities. We are proud of this partnership for the benefit our students’ success in their goals toward becoming future care providers for our communities,鈥 said 性爱视频 President John Scaringe, DC, Ed.D.

性爱视频 partnership with RAND Center for Collaborative Research in Complementary and Integrative Health results in research opportunities for MSMS graduates and fellows

Andy Schollar and Tiesha Tyson, MSMS Fellows

February 2023

Since 2021, the Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) degree program at Southern California University of Health Sciences (性爱视频) has partnered with the .

The RAND Center is a collaboration between the nonprofit RAND Corporation and institutions that train complementary and integrative health (CIH) practitioners. Its purpose is to leverage the research infrastructure at RAND to support collaborative research across, and in support of these professions.

The RAND Corporation is a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges to help make communities throughout the world safer and more secure, healthier and more prosperous. RAND is nonprofit, nonpartisan, and committed to the public interest.

性爱视频 is currently one of 13 of the who have a commitment to research and train Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) professions, including:

  • Acupuncture/East-Asian Medicine
  • Chiropractic healthcare
  • Direct-entry Midwifery
  • Massage Therapy
  • Naturopathic Medicine

“Our collective success not only increases CIH research, but also supports researchers and faculty at CIH institutions to have greater influence on the research being conducted in their field. Everyone benefits鈥攊ncluding, most importantly, the patients and communities we serve,鈥 said Michele Maiers, Co-Director of the RAND Center.

“Having collaborative research opportunities with institutions such as RAND Corporation is a privilege,” said Raheleh Khorsan, Ph.D., program director, MSMS Program at 性爱视频. “Currently, we have two MSMS Fellows who are participating with RAND Corporation research and this collaborative allows the MSMS Fellows to work with experts from other healthcare disciplines including biomedicine, integrative healthcare and social sciences. The MSMS program is always looking for more opportunities for team-based high-impact science projects. The MSMS program welcomes initiatives that support faculty and student transdisciplinary research that produces really novel, innovative healthcare sciences. The best way for integrative healthcare to move forward is to be willing to see the perspectives of other paradigms and involve best research methodologies to move the scientific evidence forward.鈥

The RAND Center research experience

For 2023, 性爱视频 has two recent Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) graduates enrolled in the MSMS 12-month Fellowship program, who are collaborating on RAND Center research projects to gain additional experience. RAND research projects are associated with 性爱视频’s MSMS Fellowship, though participants are selected through an additional, and separate application to RAND.

Andy Shollar, 性爱视频 Class of 2022 MSMS graduate and Tiesha Tyson, 性爱视频 Class of 2021 MSMS graduate, are working together on a RAND Center research project involving production of a State of the Science review on homeopathic healthcare practices. Their review will examine the research quality of published homeopathy studies, and determine how research in that area may be improved going forward. “Though this differs from bench research or wet lab, conducting research projects like this one – with a group as well-established as RAND – will allow us to effect appropriate change at the institutional and, hopefully, the national level as well,鈥 said Andy.

Andy Shollar, 性爱视频 Class of 2022 MSMS graduate.“Both the 性爱视频 MSMS Fellowship and the RAND research experiences have, and continue, to set me up to be a strong leader in my community,鈥 said Andy. “Working with faculty and students over several multidisciplinary institutions has shown me when I need to step up and help guide others in the right direction, versus taking a step back to evaluate and ask questions. Skills like these are invaluable in the field of medicine because physicians are typically the leaders of healthcare teams. My exposure to this kind of environment through my leadership role is an opportunity that puts me in a position to be prepared for when I have patients and colleagues to both guide and listen to, on multiple fronts.鈥

Tiesha Tyson, 性爱视频 Class of 2021 MSMS graduate.“The Fellowship is opening so many doors and opportunities such as working with the faculty who taught us, working with and learning from the RAND Center, and having a role in creating an effective MSMS program at 性爱视频,鈥 said Tiesha. “RAND is a great opportunity to further my research skills while collaborating with wonderful people from various backgrounds. This is a wonderful opportunity to see and be involved with research led by heavy hitters in the field.鈥

The journey to the MSMS Fellowship

The 性爱视频 MSMS Fellows are selected based on their potential to make a positive, long-lasting contribution to their academic discipline. The MSMS Fellowship has an emphasis on teaching courses and conducting research and provides funding for both coursework and extracurricular projects.

“Obtaining a fellowship not only allows aspiring grad students, medical fellows and postdocs to gain the financial means necessary to achieve their academic goals, it also helps them bolster their professional reputation as scholars,鈥 says Dr. Khorsan. “A fellowship not only helps development of new skills, but it sets a candidate apart in the job market as future employers and funders may look at a fellowship as a marker of external validation of quality.鈥

“Both Andy and Tiesha were candidates with a clear sense of purpose, capable of articulating how the fellowship will help them achieve their long-term career goal,鈥 said Dr. Khorsan. “Both graduates are solid in terms of their academic interests and plans, which transfers over into making them solid, qualified, and convincing applicants for both the 性爱视频 Fellowship and RAND Center partner projects, which is why and how they were selected.鈥

“As a MSMS student at 性爱视频, I served the campus community as a Student Senator and was Co-Founder and Vice President of the Melanated Medics Club, while enrolled as a student in the program. Serving the campus community and implementing new programs and opportunities to ensure the success of students led me to furthering my pursuit as a Fellow,鈥 said Tiesha.

“Throughout my time as an MSMS student, I was very involved with my peers and faculty/staff as the Vice President of the MSMS Pre-Health Club, and as the first tutor for the program itself,鈥 said Andy. “A couple months after I had graduated from the MSMS program, Dr. Khorsan, MSMS Program Director, approached Tiesha and myself about the Fellowship opportunity. As someone who loves to get involved, share experiences, and help others grow, I couldn’t resist the invitation.鈥

As Fellows, Andy and Tiesha advocate for students to ensure their learning experience is as efficient and painless as possible, especially at a time when technology is rapidly evolving throughout the educational environment, as the MSMS program is fully online. They serve as moderators for current MSMS program students, attending class with MSMS students from Tuesday-Friday, and relay any feedback they may have to the faculty and staff so that necessary changes or adjustments can be made to improve their online learning environment. They ensure that MSMS students have a successful experience as they maneuver and progress throughout the program, tailoring the experience to their needs and providing effective communication and learning environments between students and faculty.

The Fellows also provide tutoring to MSMS students in all content covered throughout the duration of the program and help guide students in creating a timeline for applying to health professions programs.

The Fellowship experience and reward

“I think the most rewarding moments I’ve had throughout my fellowship are when students come back and tell me how I’ve helped them succeed in some way,鈥 said Andy. “I know it seems a little mundane, but it continues to blow my mind that just months after being in their shoes, I can now come in and help students reach their goals, as well as actively see them grow in such a short period of time. It’s extremely gratifying and rewarding to know that sharing my experiences positions others for success.鈥

“To future and current MSMS students: I can honestly and sincerely say that though this program is short, it is – to this day – one of the hardest things I have worked towards in my life,鈥 said Andy. “You will be challenged on a completely new level, but in the end, the work and time you dedicate to this program is work and time dedicated towards your goal of becoming a healthcare professional. Don’t be afraid to dig in and go hard to get to where you want to be. No one’s path is pre-determined or linear. You are exactly where you need to be right now and the work you put in will get you to where you want to go.鈥

For Tiesha, the biggest reward has come in the form of invaluable lessons learned from collaboration and building a solid support system. “In undergrad, we’re typically taught to individually be our best selves, academically. But with the MSMS program, collaborating and forming a reliable team helps you as you navigate this program. I also had to re-learn how to study, which involved breaking old and bad habits, and form new and better study habits. This program requires dedication and determination to cross the finish line (graduating and pursuing your goals). You may seem overwhelmed and unsure of yourselves, but do your best. The 性爱视频 MSMS faculty are very supportive and willing to help and build connections with previous cohorts. Lastly, be a part of the 性爱视频 community. Take on leadership roles, create an organization, participate in active 性爱视频 organizations,鈥 said Tiesha.

Prior to earning her MSMS degree from 性爱视频 in 2021, Tiesha earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina. “My goal is to become a doctor, preferably a General Surgeon or Forensic Pathologist,鈥 she said.

And for Andy, prior to earning her MSMS degree from 性爱视频, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Florida. “My career goal has always been to pursue medicine as a physician. I am currently applying to medical schools this application cycle and hope to begin my journey towards becoming a physician this upcoming Fall. However, throughout undergrad, and in my current role as an MSMS Fellow, I have always found myself leading others from an educational standpoint. I want to integrate my passion for education and medicine by eventually going into academic medicine so that I can pass on my knowledge and experiences to others that wish to follow the same path as me.鈥
